What do you believe is the purpose of a college education?
I believe the purpose of a college education is to further your learning into a specific field of expertise that you want to pursue as a career. I believe that one goes to college with a plan of what they want to do but only through going through schooling does one's plan become finalized or changed. College allows individuals to discover who they are meant to be.
What does it mean to be educated?
In my perspective, to be educated goes beyond schooling. I know plenty of people who did not obtain a college degree, yet live a very successful life and have a career they love. With this being said though, in today's society it is getting harder and harder to bypass extended education. Less employers are willing to provide the training needed to complete their job requirements and require some form of degree. So schooling is an inevitable form of education. To me, being educated means to have good communication skills and be knowledgeable in a wide variety of topics.
What experiences have you had with education that led you to this belief?
My high school education experience was very good but it was also limited compared to what public schools offered. I did not have a say in what classes I took. I graduated with a class of 23 so we all had the same classes and schedule. While I did very well with this system, it is very different than the system setup at Bloomsburg University. While good communication skills came naturally to me in high school, I have found it harder to portray them in college. The fact that we have a lot of control over which classes we want to take also makes it easier to have a broad knowledge.
